My reaction to The Graduate was a bit disgusted. I was not in class when the movie was presented to us, so I took the movie home to watch, not knowing what the movie was about at all, so you can imagine my surprise when viewing a movie that takes place in a time in which such behavior was not expectable and as Mrs. Robinson proceeded to seduce and take her clothes off in front of Ben Bradley.
It took me a while to get used to the theme of the film, but as the movie went on and i started to figure out Ben Bradley I became almost empathetic, not that I have ever had an affair like him or have been in such a situation but I can empathize in the situation that he feels like a fish out of water and he’s just trying to make up for his mistakes.
I liked the idea of Simon and Garfunkel’s music being the only music in the soundtrack. I like how a star can be realized through a popular film, especially such a provocative film.
Throughout the film I noticed different effects. Mrs. Robinson seems to be seductive and confident, but as the film goes on you see how sad she is and pathetic. The scene where she is in the corner of the hallway looking small, sick, and helpless conveys this.
I begin to like the movie better once you see Ben Bradley open up more. I feel it is difficult to connect to a movie and/or character when they are closed off, it is difficult to put yourself in their place.
Over all I enjoyed the movie, it was a nice break from the usual drama’s I watch. The issue in the movie got me thinking….
